Topic Moderation

The topic moderation feature allows easy moderation of a topic via a simple drop-down menu. The topic moderation menu is located directly below the last post of a topic, on the left-hand side. AutoTools can also be applied to a topic with topic moderation.

Moderation Options

To apply a moderation tool, simply click the drop-down menu labeled Moderation. The following are options that can be applied to a topic using topic moderation:

  • Close Topic prevents users from posting in a topic (unless they are in a user group that can post in closed topics).
  • Open Topic allows all users (with correct permissions) to post in a topic. It will reverse the effects of closing a topic.
  • Delete Topic removes a topic from a board completely.

Tip: It is a much better idea to enable the trash can feature and trash topics than to delete them.

  • Pin Topic notes a topic as important and thus places it under the Pinned Topics row in a forum. A topic can be removed from this row by unpinning it (see below).
  • Unpin Topic removes a topic from the Pinned Topics row and places it in the normal topic list for that forum. This option is the reverse of pinning a topic.
  • Trash Topic automatically moves a topic to the trash can if the trash can feature has been setup (via the Admin CP).
  • Move Topic transports a topic from one forum to another. The Create Link to New Location option that appears when moving a topic allows you to leave a link, or trace, of the topic's original location in the forum it was moved from.
  • Combine Topic merges the topic it is used in with another selected topic, with the posts from the topic posted earlier appearing first. (In IPB v1.3, this feature was called merge topic.)
  • Edit Topic edits a topic's title and/or description.
  • Unsubscribe All cancels all topic subscriptions made using the “Track Topic” feature. Topic subscriptions can be viewed and edited via the usercp.
  • Bump Topic moves the selected topic to the top of the topic list that appears when viewing a forum. This feature will not, however, move a topic into the pinned or announcement rows in a forum.
  • Hide Topic sets a topic as invisible to users. To moderators, hidden topics appear as regular topics when browsing a forum, except with a special highlighted color to differentiate from regular (approved) topics.
  • Approve Topic causes a hidden topic to become visible to users.
  • Topic History displays a detailed log of all moderation actions that have occurred in the topic, including Name, IP, Moderator's Action, and Date. Name is the username of the user who edited the topic. IP refers to the IP address of the editor of the topic. Moderator's Action explains how the topic was edited. Date is the date that the topic was edited.

Note: Open Topic, Unpin Topic, and Approve Topic are reverse options and will only appear on the moderation menu when a topic is closed, pinned, or hidden respectively.

Applying AutoTools with Topic Moderation

Automatic Moderation Tools, or AutoTools, can also be used with topic moderation. The AutoTools drop-down menu is located to the direct right of the moderation menu. To apply an AutoTool with topic moderation, simply select an AutoTool and click “Submit.”
