The ZetaBoards Chatroom

The ZetaBoards IRC channels provide an easy method of real-time communication for members. You do not need to own, or be registered on, a ZetaBoards board in order to use the IRC channels.

Basic IRC Connection Information

The basic details you need to connect to IRC and join our chatrooms are below. If you know how to set up your client, these details are what you need to use.

For easy step-by-step instructions for specific clients, see the Connection HowTos section below.

Nicknames and NickServ Interaction

A nickname – also referred to as a nick – is the name by which you appear to other users on IRC. Our channels are restricted to registered users only, so you will need to register your nickname with NickServ, Freenode's nickname management bot, before taking part in discussions. Each time you re-connect and return to IRC, you need to IDENTIFY before you are able to talk in the channel.

To register use:

/msg NickServ REGISTER your-password your-email

To identify yourself (the login that must be performed on each visit) use:

/msg NickServ IDENTIFY your-password

If your connection drops, and you find that your nick is still active when you re-connect, you can remove the old nick by using:

/msg NickServ GHOST realnick your-password

It is also a good idea to group realnick_ to your account. Upon re-connecting, your IRC client may append an underscore to your nickname as it believes your real nick is still in use (Pidgin will append a 1). You can also group an alternative nick aswell, simply switch to it and use:

/msg NickServ GROUP

Note: If your chosen nickname is 16 characters long, an underscore will not be appended due to limitations imposed by freenode's IRC software, which limits nicknames to 16 characters. You should set up an alternative nick, ensuring you still have access to the channel.

To change nicknames (you will need to either register the new one too, or group it using the code above) use:

/nick newnick

Etiquette

All ZetaBoards Support rules apply in our IRC channels as well. This means no profanity, abuse, or TOS violations. Our staff are usually available throughout the day to handle any troublesome users.

If you feel offended; abused or attacked in any way, feel free to speak directly to a member of staff in confidence. Most IRC clients allow you to open a query with a user by clicking their nickname in the user list.

We ask that you try not to contact staff individually for support via IRC as you may not get a response. Our support boards are always available and for a guaranteed response from a staff member, a support ticket is the desired method of communication.
