Word Filters

Word filters are used in order to automatically replace certain words or phrases within posts. They are often used in order to remove profanity and put less offensive terms in their place. Word filters can be added and edited by clicking Filters under the Board Customisation heading within the Administrative control panel. A list of existing filters, as well as the options to add filters or edit existing filters, is then presented.

Adding Filters

Upon entering the Filters section of the Admin CP, you will be presented with a form entitled Create New Filter. By completing and submitting this form, a new filter will be added. The options within the form are as follows:

  • Before: this is the word or phrase which is to be replaced
  • After: this is the word or phrase which will take its place
  • Filter Type within this drop-down menu, there are two options. Partial Match will only replace phrases which loosely match the Before field, i.e. the post does not have to contain the entire phrase for the filter to take effect. Exact Match ensures that the filter will take effect only if the entire phrase is contained within the post.

Clicking Add Filter will then activate the filter and will affect all future posts.

When using the Partial Match setting, it is sometimes possible for phrases to be intercepted by the word filter that should not have been modified. For this reason, when using this setting ensure that the Before phrase is as specific as possible to avoid inconvenience to members.

Editing Filters

In the Filters section of the Admin CP, details of existing filters can also be viewed. Next to the details of each filter is an Edit button. Clicking it presents a form which allows the filter to be edited.

Clicking Edit Filter will then modify the filter. The modified filter will take effect immediately, and there is no limit to the amount of times a filter can be edited.

Removing Filters

In the Filters section of the Admin CP, details of existing filters can also be viewed. Next to the details of each filter is an Delete button. Clicking it will delete the filter. Deleted filters cannot be recovered and must be recreated as if adding a new filter.

When clicking Delete, there is no further confirmation and the deletion takes effect immediately. To avoid the possibility of a user posting profanity or other offensive material, ensure filters are only deleted when no longer needed.
